The First Minister Rhodri Morgan and Sports Minister Alun Ffred Jones have offered their congratulations to David Roberts - on winning his eighth gold medal and breaking the world record at the Paralympics in Beijing.

Congratulating David Roberts’ on his gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, First Minister Rhodri Morgan said:

"Congratulations to David Roberts from Llantwit Fardre on his gold medal in the 100m freestyle. This is another tremendous achievement by a Welsh athlete at the Paralympic Games in Beijing and now brings his tally of medals to a total of eight in his Olympic career, which means he is well on his way to catching up Dame Tanni Grey Thompson and becoming one of our most successful Paralympians of all time. Good luck to him for the rest of the games."

Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones Said:

Congratulations to David Roberts on his tremendous win today at the Beijing Aquatics Centre – it is incredible to think that this is his eighth gold medal.  To set a Paralympic record in the qualifying round is testament to his sheer dedication and talent.  I think we can expect more great performances from David, and as of today he is one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming the most successful Paralympian to come out of Wales.  Llongyfarchidau (congratulations) David!
