DIDN’T THEY DO WELL!

26 Mai 2009

Two young Pembrokeshire Boccia players took part in a top tournament recently.

Sian Jones from Goodwick and Jacob Thomas from Bethesda competed at the 2009 Welsh Boccia championships in Cardiff earlier this month.

Sian, who plays for the Young Vipers, competed in the BC2 group winning two of her six group games.

Meanwhile Jacob, who plays for the Crymych Panthers and who is also a Welsh Academy player, reached the final of the BC3 category where he was narrowly beaten by fellow Academy and GB squad member, Gareth Stafford.

Angela Miles, disability sport officer for Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - said the two players had performed exceptionally well.

"It was a remarkable achievement for Jacob, who has only recently made the transition from a thrower to a ramp player, while Sian showed great potential for the future," she said.

Based on boules, boccia was originally developed for people with cerebral plasy but is now played by people of all abilities and disabilities.

So popular has it become in Pembrokeshire that there are now two clubs – the Young Voices and Crymych Panthers -  plus several 5x60 school clubs and an estimated 30-plus players.

Crymych Panthers and the Young Vipers meet together every Wednesday at the new Haverfordwest leisure centre from 5-7pm, if you are interested in playing Boccia please come along.new
