DSE International Disability Swimming Success

19 Mai 2009

Over the weekend of May 15/16/17th, Welsh developing swimmers Adam Bendle (Swansea Valley), Daniel Bendle (Swansea Valley), Jacob Clapham (Swansea Sharks), Amy-Claire Davies (Swansea Valley), Jonathan Eke (Abertillery), Isaac Heaher (Swim Swansea), Luke Nixon (Wrexham), Morgyn Peters (Wycombe), Bethan Roberts (Denbigh), and Jack Thomas (Swansea Valley) travelled to Sheffield to compete at the DSE International meeting.

These ten younger Welsh swimmers had some very impressive swims during the weekend; with 78% personal best swim times between them.

Great performances were seen from Morgyn Peters of Wycombe SC and Amy-Claire Davies of Swansea Valley SC who are both on the GB Talent programme for 2009; both swimmers looking to secure their places on next years programmes.

Morgyn only swam in two events on the Sunday, reaching the A final in his 100bk and the B final in his 100fr. He had an outstanding 100m backstroke swim in the morning with an impressive time of 1.14.07, scoring 626 British Disability Points*.

This result ensured his selection to represent his home region of Eastern at the UK schools games which will be held in Wales in September; quite an accomplishment for a twelve year old.

Amy-Claire swam in six events achieving five out of six personal best times. She reached one A final in the 100m butterfly and four B finals in the 200m Individual Medley, 100m breaststroke, 400m freestyle and the 100m freestyle. Her favoured event, the 200m Individual Medley scored her highest British Disability Points of 588.

Luke Nixon from Wrexham who swam three impressive personal best swims on Friday is just fourteen and has recently been selected to represent Great Britain at the Deaflympics that will be held in Taipei in Taiwan this September. Luke is currently fundraising to attend this event and needs approximately £2000. Anyone who may be interested in sponsoring him should contact Huw Griffiths on 01792 513636 or huw.griffiths@welshasa.co.uk

Jack Thomas is another young Welsh swimmer who will represent Great Britain this year at the INAS-FID Global Games that will be held in the Czech Republic in July. He is just thirteen years old and this is the 2nd time that he has represented Great Britain. Last year he swam at the INAS-FID European Championships held in Poland achieving 4th place in the 200m backstroke.

He swam in six events at Sheffield and showed that he is in great form with six personal best times.  He qualified for three A finals and three B finals. His best event was the 400m freestyle where he swam his final in 4.59.91, scoring 686 British Disability Points.

Daniel Bendle also had a great weekend and shows he is well prepared for the Special Olympics in Leicester in July. He will join a 20+ strong Welsh swimming team that are hoping to do well at the Games.
