Sports Personality Awards Evening 2009
This was the 12th annual Carmarthenshire Sports Personality awards, organised by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sports Development Unit in partnership with the Carmarthenshire Local Sports Council. The evening was organised to promote, recognise and reward those athletes, coaches and volunteers who achieve and who contributed towards the continued success of sport in the County.
This year over 100 nominations were received.
Disability Sport Wales and Special Olympics were well represented
Volunteer of the Year, the three short listed nominees were:

Mike Thomas, Disability Sport
Joan Goldsmith, Athletics
Mike Thomas
Mike has volunteered his services to disability sport for the last 5 years. Mike isn’t attached to any particular club, however he volunteers at a number of different sporting events each year. These events include; athletics, boccia, and swimming, as well as the annual Carmarthenshire Disabled Sports and Activities Open day. In order to help at these events, Mike takes annual leave from work.
Mike is also involved in leading boccia sessions at Hendy School as well as volunteering with the Dragon Sport scheme.
Unfortunately Mike was not successful in winning the overall award but was delighted to be in the top three.

Yn 2009, cystadlodd Hannah fel aelod o dîm Prydain Fawr yng Ngemau Olympaidd Arbennig y Gaeaf a gynhaliwyd yn Chwefror. Dychwelodd Hannah â medal efydd a dau ruban 5ed safle. Daeth y llwyddiant hwn ar ôl i Hannah gael cwymp dri mis yn unig cyn y digwyddiad gan achosi iddi gael ei choes mewn plastr am beth amser.
Hefyd, mae Hannah wedi cystadlu ym Mhencampwriaethau Gemau Olympaidd Arbennig Gorllewin Canolbarth Lloegr lle enillodd ddwy fedal arian.
In 2009, Hannah competed as part of the Great British team at the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in February. Hannah returned with a bronze medal and two 5th place ribbons. This success came after Hannah had a fall just three months prior to the event which resulted in Hannah having her leg in plaster for sometime.
Hannah has also competed in the Special Olympics West Midlands Regional Championships where she won two silver medals.
Jemma Morris – Archery
In 2009, Jemma became the Under 16 Welsh recurve female champion after winning at the Welsh Indoor Senior Championships. Also in this year, Jemma was selected for the Great Britain Paralympic squad, the youngest squad member at just 13 years of age.
Another of Jemma’s triumphs this year was becoming the highest scoring female archer at the Gloucester junior outdoor championships. After 4 rounds of a head to head knockout, Jemma became the 2nd highest scoring junior, being beaten by a 17 year old boy who is a Great Britain youth team archer.
Also in 2009, Jemma has received the honour of being awarded the title of ‘junior bowman’ by Archery G.B and has been offered a place on the Welsh Junior Squad. Jemma became the Welsh Indoor Under 16 champion, setting new personnel best along the way and just missing out on the Welsh record by one point.

Disabled Sportsman of the Year, the short listed nominees, were:

In May 2009, Gideon competed in the Welsh Power lifting and Bench Press competition and was placed 1st in the 90kg Class for the over 40’s after lifting an incredible 162.5 kg
In August, Gideon competed in the Welsh Counties Power lifting and Bench Press competition and was again was placed first in the 90kg class after lifting 165 kg. Both these events were abled bodied competitions.
Gideon is also the current Welsh Strength Association Champion at the 90kg bodyweight for the over 40’s.
Stephen Beynon
Stephen competes in the Special Olympics in the 200m, 500m and 500m doubles sprint kayaking events. In 2009, Stephen competed in the National event in Nottingham and won a Gold and Bronze medal.
Stephen has also competed in the Summer Games and won two bronze medals and also 2 gold medals in the Welsh regional competition.
Michael Beynon
Michael was the youngest member of the Welsh Special Olympic team in 2009 and is part of the Boccia team. Michael competed in the 2009 Special Olympic Games and won a silver medal.
Michael has also introduced the sport of Boccia to his peers at Amman Valley School and also to members of the PE department.

Carmarthenshire Hall of Fame
The next award was the induction into the Carmarthenshire Hall of Fame. Carmarthenshire has a wealth of athletes and coaches who are recognised and renowned world-wide for their sporting achievements.
To celebrate the county’s proud sporting history and to officially recognise those individuals that have achieved success on a world stage, we are honoured to induct three individuals into the Carmarthenshire Sporting Hall of Fame this evening. These individuals will join existing Hall of Fame inductees which are Carwyn James (Rugby), Phil Bennett (Rugby), Lynne Thomas (Cricket and Hockey), Terry Griffiths, (Snooker) and Delme Thomas (Rugby)
Welcome into the Carmarthenshire Hall of Fame, Mr Jeff Jones
The first 2009 inductee was born in Dafen, Llanelli and went on to play cricket for England. His England debut was on 21st January 1964 and from this date, until his last England match on 28th March 1968, he played in 15 tests, taking 44 wickets. His most famous moment came in Guyana when, batting at No 11, he played out the entire last over of the match bowled by Lance Gibbs, to ensure that England escaped from the match with a draw and to secure a 1-0 series win.
This cricketer also played in 198 first class matches taking 511 wickets and on 18 separate occasions, took 5 wickets or more in an innings.
Welcome into the Carmarthenshire Hall of Fame paralympian, Lisa Pudner.
The second inductee into the Hall of Fame was also born and resides in Llanelli. This athlete joined the British Weightlifting Association for the Disabled in 1991 and within two years, was crowned European Champion. This athlete went on to win three more European titles in 1995, 1997 and 1999 and held the World Power lifting record in 1995. In 1998, this athlete also competed in the 11th World Powerlifting Championships in Dubai and won gold in the 1999 World Wheelchair games, held in Christchurch, New Zealand.
In 2000, this athlete travelled to Sydney and represented Great Britain at the Paralympics. This athlete competed in the Under 48kg category and lifted 82 ½ kgs and came 4th, achieving a new European record.
Welcome into the Carmarthenshire Hall of Fame Gerald Davies.
The third inductee was born in Llansaint and went on to play rugby for Cardiff RFC and London Welsh.
He made his international debut on Saturday, 3 December 1966 against Australia and he was capped 46 times for Wales and scored 20 tries. He also went on tour with the British Lions in 1968 and 1971, playing in 5 tests and scoring 3 tries. After retiring as a player, he became a journalist, writing on rugby matters for The Times and he also sat on Tasker Watkins committee to reform Welsh rugby.
During the summer of 2009, he was the team manager for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.
